Yo-yos with centrifugal clutch and without

There are basically two different types of yo-yos. Those with a rigid axle to which the string is tied. This type of yo-yo is mainly used for cheaper versions. With more expensive yo-yos, the axis runs in a ball bearing. This makes it rotate much longer as there is less friction. With more modern yo-yos, there are also models with a centrifugal clutch. If the yo-yo is thrown down fast enough, it continues to turn at the bottom of the thread loop until the clutch is released again with a small jerk and the cord rolls up again.
